Abstract

This study aims to find out: 1) how is student learning outcomes, 2) student motivation, 3) how does
the use of powerpoint media influence student learning outcomes, and 4) how does the use of powerpoint
media influence student motivation in class VIII in learning to write recount texts at SMPN 1 Lunar. This
research is an experimental research with a quantitative approach. The experimental design used was a
pretest-posttest control group design. The treatment given is learning using powerpoint media. Data on
learning outcomes were obtained through learning achievement tests, while student motivation was
measured using a questionnaire. The data obtained were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and
independent sample t tests. The results of the analysis show that: 1) There was an increase in student
learning outcomes in the experimental group from 49.19 to 73.22. Whereas in the control group, learning
outcomes tended not to change significantly, namely 43.22 to 39.96; 2) There was an increase in the
learning motivation of the experimental group students after being given learning using PowerPoint media,
from 97.63 to 101.44. The control group's student motivation was relatively stable, namely 96.67 at the
pretest, slightly increasing to 98.92 at the posttest; 3) The results of the independent sample t-test give a
t-count value of 7.463 with a significance level of 0.000, which means that the use of PowerPoint media
has a significant effect on student learning outcomes in English subject; and 4) The results of testing the
second hypothesis give a t-count value of 2.345 with a significance level of 0.023, which means that the
use of powerpoint media has a significant effect on students' motivation in learning English.
