Abstract

This thesis describes the representation of social stratification and aristocracy in the novel Harry Potter and The Chambers of Secret, where students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are divided into four houses, namely Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. The division is based on the quality of their blood. Students who have pure blood where both parents are wizards are put into Slytherin dorms and students who have mixed blood are put into Gryffindor. The division of students into the boarding house became a representation of British aristocratic society, which also used blood as a measure of their social status. Harry Potter as the main character in this novel, who is actually a pure blood, appears as a figure who opposes the values of the aristocracy itself. By using Roland Barthes' Semiotic Theory, the writer finds that this novel, through Harry Potter himself, has unconsciously perpetuated these aristocratic values and represents social stratification. This film shows that resistance to aristocratic values can only be carried out by the aristocratic group itself and closes the possibility that this resistance can be carried out by groups outside that group.
